At 38, Carmel never imagined she would be raising three children on her own.
For years, her life followed a path she had carefully built, creating a home, raising her family, and working to provide stability. Along the way, she experienced both joy and deep loss, including the heartbreaking passing of a child. Through it all, she continued moving forward for her family.
After more than a decade of marriage, Carmel faced a life-changing decision. In 2025, she filed for divorce, recognizing she had already been carrying the full weight of parenting and household responsibilities on her own. The transition to single parenthood brought immediate challenges, financial strain, emotional stress, and the pressure of maintaining stability for her children during a time of uncertainty.
Choosing a New Path
Determined to create a stronger future, Carmel returned to a goal she had once set aside, her education.
After earning her associate degree in early childhood education from NorthWest Arkansas Community College, she chose to continue pursuing her bachelor’s degree through an online program at the University of Arkansas–Fort Smith. As a full-time working parent, she balances school, work, and raising three children with determination and focus.
Finding Support When It Matters Most
Carmel first learned about the Single Parent Scholarship Fund of Northwest Arkansas through a simple moment while working in childcare. She noticed a family connected to the program, and that memory stayed with her.
When the time came to continue her education, she applied.
“Receiving the scholarship removed a major barrier and allowed me to continue my education without taking away from my children.”
Receiving the scholarship provided more than financial support. It connected Carmel to counseling services, program staff, and a community that understands the realities of single parenthood.
Turning Passion Into Purpose
Carmel has spent the past decade working in early childhood education and currently serves as a lead teacher for children ages two and a half to three.
Her education has strengthened her ability to:
- Create meaningful learning environments
- Support children during critical stages of development
- Partner with families in impactful ways
What began as a job has grown into a purpose-driven career.
Looking Ahead
Carmel plans to continue advancing in early childhood education, focusing on supporting young learners during their most foundational years.
Just as importantly, she hopes to show her children that it is never too late to pursue your goals.
