Balancing parenthood, work, school, and everyday responsibilities is no small task. For single parents pursuing higher education, each day can require difficult choices, personal sacrifices, and the determination to keep moving forward even when the path feels overwhelming.
At Single Parent Scholarship Fund of Northwest Arkansas, recipients like Hailey Edwards and Katie remind us why financial assistance, encouragement, and supportive services all matter. While their journeys are different, both women share a powerful truth: having someone believe in you can change the direction of your life.
Finding Support in the Hardest Moments
Hailey is a single mother, full-time employee, and full-time student. After going through a divorce with a young son depending on her, she spent several years focused on simply surviving. Eventually, her desire to create more opportunities for her family led her back to college.
Like many single parents, Hailey’s days begin early and end late. After a full day of work, she returns home to dinner, chores, schoolwork, bath time, and bedtime. In the middle of it all, she often wrestles with whether she is giving enough time to her education or being present enough for her son.
“There have been moments when the weight of these responsibilities felt overwhelming,” Hailey shared. “It’s easy to feel like giving up on your dreams when life becomes too much.”
A friend introduced Hailey to SPSFNWA, and she soon discovered that the organization offered much more than financial assistance. Counseling, wellness resources, and ongoing encouragement from the SPSFNWA team helped her navigate some of her most difficult moments.
“For me, one of the most impactful benefits from this scholarship program has been the tremendous encouragement from its team members,” Hailey said. “They provide a reminder that someone believes in me and in the future I am working so hard to build.”
That support has helped Hailey continue developing her skills, building her confidence, and working toward her goals. It has also given her an opportunity to demonstrate the value of perseverance, education, and hard work to her son.
The Courage to Take the Next Step
Katie’s journey began with the decision to escape an abusive marriage and protect her infant daughter. With help from a neighbor and the unwavering support of her family, she was able to begin rebuilding her life.
Years later, Katie accepted a position with the Bella Vista Fire Department and moved from Oklahoma to Northwest Arkansas. Starting over in a new state without family nearby was intimidating, but she took the transition one day and one step at a time. Through her work as a firefighter and paramedic, she discovered a sense of purpose and belonging.
As Katie considered her family’s long-term needs, she began exploring a transition into nursing. Returning to school required her to retake several courses, creating questions about how she could afford tuition without taking resources away from her daughter.
Katie found SPSFNWA while researching scholarship opportunities. Although self-doubt nearly kept her from applying, she completed the application and was selected for an interview.
“I must have read that email a dozen times with tears in my eyes because, for once in my adult life, I felt like someone other than my family truly saw me and felt like I deserved a chance,” Katie recalled.
With scholarship support, Katie completed the prerequisites needed to apply to nursing school. She has since set a new goal of continuing her education and becoming a nurse practitioner.
“Looking back now, I realize every major turning point in my life started with someone believing in me,” Katie said. “My neighbor believed we were worth saving. My family believed I was capable. The Single Parent Scholarship Fund believed I deserved an opportunity.”
More Than a Scholarship
Hailey’s and Katie’s stories show that a scholarship can represent much more than help with tuition. It can provide reassurance during moments of uncertainty, access to meaningful resources, and a community of people who see a parent’s potential even when they struggle to see it themselves.
For Hailey, that community is a reminder that she is not carrying the responsibilities of parenthood and education alone. For Katie, it is another example of how one person or organization choosing to believe can open the door to an entirely new direction.
Their stories also demonstrate the far-reaching impact of investing in single parents. When parents earn a degree or credential, the benefits extend beyond an individual accomplishment. Their children witness courage, perseverance, and the power of continuing to pursue a goal despite difficult circumstances.
Because of the generosity of donors, volunteers, partners, and community supporters, single parents across Northwest Arkansas are gaining the resources and encouragement they need to continue their education and create lasting change for their families.
Sometimes, the next chapter begins with one opportunity, one encouraging voice, or one person willing to say, “I believe in you.”
