From Waitress to Workforce Leader: Erin’s Story
Imagine being a 19-year-old, new to college, when life throws a curveball: pregnancy. That’s exactly what happened to Erin. Suddenly, the future she envisioned seemed impossible. College was out, and the harsh realities of single parenthood set in.
“Time and finances were the biggest hurdles,” Erin recalls. Working full-time as a waitress, she juggled rent, utilities, childcare, and the constant fear of something breaking down – a car, an appliance – pushing her over the edge. The support of her son’s grandparents was invaluable, but the weight of providing for her child rested squarely on her shoulders. “It created a constant fear that my life would always be full of new challenges.”
Erin excelled in the restaurant industry, working her way up to management. But when the restaurant closed unexpectedly, she faced a harsh reality. “I knew I needed more stability, a career, something I was excited about.” Looking at job postings, she realized a common denominator: a degree. Education became her path to a brighter future.
While waiting tables, she met a current SPSFNWA recipient, a working student who showed her that it was possible. When the restaurant closed, Erin knew it was time to act. Encouraged by a family friend, she contacted SPSFNWA. “I was met with such encouragement and comfort. It was the boost I needed.”
Erin started with elementary education but discovered a passion for working with college students. She pursued a master’s in higher education and earned her undergraduate degree in Psychology. “I had a whole team holding me accountable, telling me I could make it.” SPSFNWA provided more than just financial aid; they offered a community. “We shared resources, relatable stories. The staff wasn’t just there to write a check; they helped with everything!” From gas cards and household supplies to professional development workshops and counseling, SPSFNWA addressed every aspect of Erin’s journey.
Today, following her love of data and media, Erin is a Senior Associate Manager of Online Merch at The Hershey Company. “I never thought as a 19-year-old single mother waitress that I would someday be doing marketing for the most delicious chocolate and candy company in the world!” She credits her education and the support of SPSFNWA for her success. “I’m now in a position where I don’t have to worry about the electric being shut off. All the bills are paid, money is being saved, and I can even travel!”
Erin’s son, Connor, is now a college student himself, inspired by his mother’s journey. Erin actively volunteers with the SPSFNWA Alumni Council, sharing her story and encouraging other single parents. “I’ll never forget those who helped me. It’s my time to give back.” One of her proudest moments was speaking at an SPSFNWA event in a venue where she used to work as a server. It was a powerful symbol of her transformation.
Erin’s story is a powerful reminder of the impact of SPSFNWA. “Don’t be afraid to fail,” she advises other single parents considering education. “Dip your toe in the water. You might surprise yourself!” To donors, she expresses heartfelt gratitude. “Thank you for believing in us, for investing in us. Your donations not only help us with our education but tell us that we deserve better and that we can do it.”
